Highclere Holly is a cross between the Common Holly I. aquifolium and Madeira Holly I. perado.

The cross occured accidentally in the early 1800s, apparently at Highclere Park, Hampshire. Tender Madeira (or Canary) hollies were taken outside in the summer and cross-pollinated with the common holly.
