This old Sweet Chestnut in Bush Wood is known locally as "The Witches Tree". It is seen here in April 2007, with members of an ecology class from Wanstead House measuring the circumference and height of the tree to ascertain its age. It measured 8.20m - which makes it the largest of the Sweet Chestnut trees in the area. Tricia Moxey suggests that it is much older than the 18th century avenues in the area and it was quite likely around as slim tree in the Tudor period!

Similar measurements were also made of the Trees on Wanstead Green. (see photos here).
