These Ramshorn Galls appear to be leftover from the previous season. The reason for the common name can be clearly seen, particularly in the bottom example. They have affected axillary buds of this pedunculate oak in Wanstead Park. Andricus species are gall-formings wasps in the family Cynipidae. First recorded in Britain in 1997 in Berkshire (British Plant Galls, Redfern and Shirley), Andricus aries is now common in London and SE England, and the gall has also been found on Wanstead Flats.
