The first of this species I saw locally, a female spotted below Bullet Hill by Northumberland Avenue, opposite Aldersbrook School. Subsequently I have seen Aeshna cyanea numerous times, including in my garden.

As in this instance, it is not uncommon for this species to perch for a considerable time, and allowing one to get close for observation or a photograph.
